Oh oh! You are traveling and discover that you have forgotten your toothbrush. (Who didn't it happen to?) These six things will keep you smiling:
Take cinnamon chewing gum
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have discovered that this flavour reduces the population of oral bacteria. This is due to the fact that it contains cinnamic aldehyde, an essential oil that inhibits the growth of caries-causing bacteria.
Take abrasive food
Firm or crunchy foods help clean teeth: apple, carrot, celery and unsweetened popcorn will do the job. They will be more effective if you take them at the very end of the meal.
Have a cup of tea
Tea flavonoids help prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to the teeth and block the production of a type of sugar that promotes tooth decay. This drink is also rich in fluorine, a mineral that strengthens teeth.
Use alcohol-free mouthwash
A good rinse at the end of a meal can make all the difference. Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash, with the results of some studies indicating that those containing alcohol may increase the risk of oral cancer.
Hydrate your mouth
Take a glass of water every hour. The more you drink, the more bacteria you eliminate on your teeth and in your oral cavity, which means less risk of gingivitis, less tooth decay and fresher breath.
Take xylitol chewing gum
Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in some chewing gums, helps reduce the population of harmful bacteria. It only takes a few pieces a day to change the chemical balance of the mouth and help prevent cavities.
